Recipes can be bought in a book in Act III, and in Act IV you may be taught recipe for free by Dandelion's friend (unnamed merchant-dressed woman, second day in the village near blacksmith or cow). If you don't have success piecing clues together from the books and matching them to the symbols, you can always attempt to find the solution through trial and error. If you get the order wrong, you'll take damage. Remember that they should be put out in a certain order. You can get near to the runes and press the button indicated on-screen to do so.
